Liberia occupies a distinctive place in Africa’s history. Established in 1822 and declared an independent republic in 1847, it became Africa’s first independent republic. Its capital, Monrovia, bears the name of President James Monroe of the United States. Ambassador Conteh followed with his remarks and Toast of Friendship and Cooperation, expressing appreciation for the continued partnership between Liberia and the United States. He thanked members of the diplomatic corps, government representatives, development partners, and the Liberian community for their support and friendship. A representative of the United States Government then delivered congratulatory remarks and proposed a toast in honor of Liberia’s 179th Independence Anniversary.
